London Kerning! A Book of Typographic Perambulations

Created by Glenn Fleishman

London has long been a place where type design and graphic design coalesced, and where the machinery of making fonts and the people with an eye to create them intermingled. This book captures a slice of both the contemporary part of it and its history, especially regarding type designer Berthold Wolpe.

Second Printing in Progress!
about 6 years ago – Wed, Mar 21, 2018 at 06:44:38 PM

I received enough orders (and in just over a week) to go back on press for a second printing of London Kerning! If you were looking to snag another copy in print, you can place an order via my site, and new copies will ship around April 10.

After that, I’ll have them in stock if you want to refer people to get a copy and for bulk sales for bookstores and gifts. (Contact me if you want to buy five or more copies for a discount and exact shipping prices.)

Sold out & accepting orders for a reprint edition
about 6 years ago – Sat, Mar 10, 2018 at 02:00:45 PM

Well, that was fast! I had a dozen or so copies left of the first printing of London Kerning, and figured they’d sell over time, but they’re now all gone. I’ve decided to reprint, and if you backed a print copy and want another copy (or more), or want to direct people to order their own, I have a pre-order system set up that won’t process charges until the new edition is ready to ship. You can order through this link.

If you’re interested in multiple copies for resale or to give away, please drop me a line, and I’ll be happy to offer a discount and figure out shipping charges.

Books (and other items) shipped
about 6 years ago – Fri, Mar 09, 2018 at 11:29:55 PM

Hello!

London Kerning’s shipped out, and people will start receiving their copies in their mailboxes today. Because of the small format, nearly everything was shipped first-class mail in the U.S. and internationally. If you're outside the U.S., and it doesn’t show up within about 2 weeks, please let me know, or if your book arrives in other than flat condition! (If you ordered other items in the BackerKit post-campaign stage, those have also all shipped now, too.)

I went a little close to the edge in terms of my print order, so I have just a handful of copies left for sale. I may go back to print for another run if there’s sufficient interest, but that would require some bulk orders from people interested in reselling or giving the book away to make it work.

This project was a labor (or labour) of love, and I’m so glad I did it. I thank you for your support and hope you like the result! I did a post-mortem on the planning and finances that you can read at my Patreon site. The project finished a fair piece in the hole due to slightly higher expenses and slightly lower sales than I expected, and I priced the book and especially shipping slightly too low as well. But I should ultimately sell enough ebooks to make up the difference and break even. I wouldn’t have traded this experience for anything.

Booooooooks have arrived!
about 6 years ago – Wed, Mar 07, 2018 at 01:05:13 AM

Folks, super excited that the London Kerning books arrived today! And they look fabulous!

This was a quick project: launched in November, trip in late Nov/early Dec, writing through January, then editing and into ebook in early February, and a print edition a month later. Thanks for being on the journey with me!

The book!
The book!

I’m hoping to ship out the first batches tomorrow for both U.S. and international orders. My family stands ready tonight to help me pack and label!
